New 2016 Ram 1500 at Roberts Chrysler Dodge for Meriden, CT

The 2016 Ram 1500 will win over full-size truck buyers looking for a diesel offering and an opulent interior, but safety scores need improvement. There are few changes for the 2016 model year. The 2016 Ram 1500 lineup gets two new models: a Ram Rebel off-road model, and a Ram Laramie Limited luxury liner. The body structure of the truck has been revised for improved crash protection, though updated scores aren't out yet. The luxury truck market is alive and well, and that's especially obvious when blinded by the shimmering chrome grille of the new 2016 Ram Trucks Laramie Limited trim level.

Under the 1500's Hood

Ram gives the 1500 a base engine that is a 3.6-liter V6. It is standard on the SLT trim level. Output measures 305 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque. Two-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive are available. The only available transmission is an eight-speed automatic. With two-wheel-drive, the EPA estimates fuel economy to be 17 mpg city, 25 mpg highway and 20 mpg combined. Tradesman models come with a 4.7-liter V8 engine as standard equipment. It puts out 310 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque. The rest of the trim levels come with a 5.7-liter V8 engine that produces 395 horsepower and 407 pound-feet of torque. Both engines come with a six-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy estimates are the same for both V8 engines, at 14 mpg city, 20 mpg highway and 16 mpg combined.

Design of Ram 1500

Several years ago the Ram was the first truck to take on the so-called "big-rig" look and it's a style that, on the Ram 1500 for 2015, still stands out in a crowd. You can't mistake the obviously big and decidedly bold chrome grille that looks for all the world like it came from an 18-wheeler. The 2015 Ram also offers some features still not found on the competition, such as the Rambox storage system that utilizes the tops of the rear fenders.

Other exterior details include LED turn signals and taillights and an attractive assortment of available wheels. The 2015 Ram 1500 full-size truck is a nice place to climb in, sit down and take a ride. Materials show a high level of quality and panel gaps are notably tight. In the Quad Cab version rear-seat legroom is generous, but the Crew Cab models offer even more legroom for stretching out. The center cluster on the instrument panel includes a Multiview screen, which can display well over 300 readouts of pertinent vehicle information. We found the standard front seats to lack proper support for those longer rides - our suggestion is to upgrade to the available 10-way power driver's seat.

Conclusions

Ram has made strides in making its safety measures accessible and actually useful. Optional blind-spot-monitoring warning lights are easily noticeable in side mirrors, and the Ram's backup camera is a must-have in a truck as big as this. A standard suite of passive safety features comes standard, including airbags, pretensioning seatbelts, antilock brakes, and brake assist.
