Family Road Trip Activities

A road trip with kids means preparation to keep them entertained while in the car. Some kids love people and car watching during the drive. Others love to play games or watch movies. Some stick to their tablets and then for some, books are the answer to keep them from asking "are we there yet?" 100 times. They might still ask but not as much if they have something to occupy their time. Fun books that feature a road trip are also a great way to prepare kids for the journey. This might be especially important if this is their first road trip or if it a longer road trip than what they experienced before.

Here are some books to bring along for younger kids.

Are We There Yet

Did you chuckle? Yes there is a road trip book named after the question most parents dread while driving. Are We There Yet is a hoot of a book taking kids on the journey to grandma's house. Bored? Ok, let's go back in time. You might even find a page in upside down in this on the road adventure. Kids and parents will get a few laughs out of this one.

50 States

The American Road trip is well regarded as one of the greatest ways to take a family vacation. In 50 States, author Gabrielle Balkin offers up some fun facts and things to do that might lead you off the beaten path. This book is colorful and filled with adventure. It's a fun one to play a game of flip the page as you approach each state line you are crossing. It's also fun to explore a particular state if your trip is more local.

Cars And Trucks And Things That Go

This one is perfect for kids that love different types of vehicles. It's from the Richard Scarry collection so you know it will be filled with lots of color and adventure. The Pig family is fun to follow and kids will crack up when they realize where the Pig family ends up after their journey. This one is also fun to flip through and identify cars your kids will see along the drive. Imagine them looking out for a banana car.

Mr. Popper's Penguins

Have kids fascinated with penguins or the Arctic? Make this one a fun read aloud for your road trip. Mr. Popper starts out with just one penguin but of course every penguin needs a fried or a few. Take this adventure with Mr. Popper and the penguins. This one is sure to calm the anxious child who is ready to get out of the car.
