Powertrain Options for the 2019 Ram 1500
There are a few powertrain options for the all-new 2019 Ram 1500! Several changes have been made for the 2019 model year in order to improve the drivability, towing capabilities, payload, fuel economy, and overall performance. Some of these changes include the addition of the new eTorque mild hybrid system, vital weight innovations and reductions, and an upgraded TorqueFlite transmission.Â
What is the new mild-hybrid eTorque system?
This new system takes the place of the traditional alternator used in previous 1500 models with a motor generator unit. This unit works in conjunction alongside a 48-volt battery pack to quickly and seamlessly enable the engine start-stop function and add torque to the engine crankshaft during driving situations that call for it. All of which boosts the Ram 1500's efficiency and responsiveness. When the engine of the 1500 is running the system's motor generator feeds the 48-volt current to a 430 watt-hour lithium-ion NMC-Graphite Battery. This air-cooled battery pack is mounted inside the 1500's cabin to the rear wall. The eTorque system also reclaims energy during periods of braking and deceleration to charge the battery!Â
What are the engine options for the 2019 Ram 1500?
The first engine option for the new 1500 is the Pentastar 3.6-liter V6 equipped with eTorque. Ram specifically tuned this engine for truck-duty and boy does it deliver, pumping out 269 pound-feet of torque and 305 horsepower. This comes equipped with other advanced technologies as well including two-step variable lift and wide-range VVT that come together to distribute the optimal blend of fuel economy and power.
The other engine option for the 2019 Ram 1500 is the 5.7-liter Hemi V8. This incredible engine produces an impressive 410 pound-feet of torque and 395 pound-feet of torque. Unlike other turbocharged engines, this engine produces a smooth broad power band to avoid peakiness and hesitation. This V8 engine also comes outfitted with advanced technology like cylinder deactivation and VVT that help boost fuel economy and performance. With cylinder deactivation, the engine's control computer will turn off the spark and fuel and close the exhaust and intake valves on half of the engine's 8 cylinders. This happens when the full power of the truck is not needed. The variable camshaft timing boosts fuel economy by lowering the engine pumping work by delaying the closure of the intake valve which then increases the expansion process of the combustion event. This engine also gains a brand-new 850-watt electric cooling fan that uses Pulse Width Modulation to tailor the fan's energy to cooling. This eliminates the traditional fan blade and even boosts fuel economy. This engine is also offered with the mild hybrid eTorque system.Â
How was the TorqueFlite transmission updated?
All 2019 Ram 1500s are equipped with a fully electronic TorqueFlite automatic 8-speed transmission. This transmission has a range of gear ratios that help keep the engine rotations per minute in the right range no matter the task. The V6 engine is mated to a TorqueFlite 850RE while the V8 engine is matched to an upgraded TorqueFlite 8HP75 both of which are produced by FCA. These transmissions come with new computer controllers that can process data faster than before and manage the operation between the eTorque system and the transmission. These transmissions offer more than individual shift maps in order to maximize shift changes to optimal drivability, performance, and fuel economy.Â
