Most of us know the change in temperature from season to season isn't good for our hair or skin, but did you know the sudden and severe fluctuation also does a number on our cars? Just as we update wardrobe and beauty routines to compensate for the change in weather, we must do the same for our cars to keep them in tip top shape. Following these tips can ensure your vehicle is properly winterized and ready for the duration of cold weather that's on the way:
Battery: Car batteries will succumb to the elements just as the engine does. If you're not sure what or where the "terminals, voltage, and hydrometer" are, have a professional check the battery for you. Something as simple as a cracked or loose cable can impact your battery's performance.
Engine oil and coolant: To protect your engine against the elements, switch to a thinner, less viscous oil, and make sure your coolant to water ratio is modified for the winter. According to DMV.org, the typical winter ratio is 60% coolant to 40% water.
Lights maintenance: Just as important as your windshield are your head, brake, and turn signal lights. Make sure they're clean and in working order.
Tires: The air in tires fluctuates as the outside temperatures do. Be sure to keep your tires properly and sufficiently inflated, and if possible, upgrade to snow tires to battle the snow, sleet and ice.Â
Windshield care: Choose wiper fluid with anti-freeze and check the levels regularly. Also consider replacing your wipers before the bad weather hits. Winter roads are messy and when that mess gets spit back onto your windshield, you'll be using your wipers and fluid a lot.
